What does it mean to dream about water?
Water in a dream is most often read as the emotional or unconscious side of life. In scripture it is both the chaos of the flood and the water of cleansing. In Islamic dream books, how clear the water is often changes the reading.

What each tradition says
Depth psychology, Jung's branch of psychiatry, Europe, from the 1910s
Jungian analysis
In Jungian dream analysis, water is commonly read as a picture of the unconscious, the part of the mind you are not directly aware of. Deep or still water is read differently from a flood, and the reading is worked out with the dreamer rather than fixed.

The Hebrew Bible
The Hebrew Bible uses water both ways. The flood in Genesis is water as chaos and judgment, and it ends with a covenant marked by a rainbow. Elsewhere, water is used for washing and renewal. A dream reader drawing on it has both pictures to choose from.

Islamic dream interpretation
Dream manuals in the Islamic tradition, many attributed to the eighth-century scholar Ibn Sirin, often read water by its condition: clear running water as a good sign, muddy or stagnant water as a difficulty. Scholars hold that the meaning also depends on who the dreamer is, and historians doubt Ibn Sirin wrote all of what carries his name.
How to weigh it
Water dreams come in every size, from a glass on a table to a wave over a house, and the readings above get very different as the water changes. A dream reading is a reading of the details you remember. Notice what the water was doing, how you felt about it, and where you were standing.
