Greek myth and religion
The oldest surviving Greek dream manual, the Oneirocritica by Artemidorus (second century CE), reads the mouth as a household and the teeth as the people in it, sorted by rank, sex and age. He also links losing teeth to paying off debts. Artemidorus reads a dream against the dreamer's own job and standing, so the same dream does not mean the same thing for everyone.

Freudian dream theory
Freud treated dreams as disguised wishes and anxieties, and he read dreams of losing teeth as tied to the body and to sex. Many later writers have set that particular reading aside, while keeping the idea that a dream can stand in for something it does not name.

Jungian analysis
Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, held that a dream image comes from inside the dreamer. A Jungian reading would start by asking what teeth mean to you: strength, being able to bite back, the face you show to other people. The meaning is worked out with the dreamer, not looked up.

How to weigh it
Losing teeth is a commonly reported dream. A 2018 study found that people who had teeth dreams were more likely to wake with irritation in the teeth, gums or jaw, which points to an ordinary physical trigger for at least some of them. A reading that treats a common dream as a special message about you claims more than it can carry. If you grind your teeth at night or your jaw is sore in the morning, that is a question for a dentist.
