What does it mean to dream about a snake?
Snakes carry some of the most opposed meanings of any dream image. They are a symbol of healing in Greek medicine, of temptation in the Christian story of Eden, of the instinctive side of the mind in Jungian reading, and of sexuality in Freud.

Greek myth and religion
The god of medicine, Asclepius, carried a staff with a single snake wound around it, and that staff is still the symbol of medicine today. At his healing sanctuaries, people slept in the temple hoping for a dream that would show a cure, and harmless snakes were kept on the grounds.

Christian tradition
In the Genesis story of Eden, a serpent persuades Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, and the snake has stood for temptation or deceit in much Christian art ever since. This is the reading of particular branches and texts, not of Christianity as one thing.

Jungian analysis
Jung noticed that snake and dragon images turn up in the myths of many different peoples. He read them as pictures of the instinctive side of the mind, which can feel threatening as a person becomes aware of it. This is one school's interpretation, built on decades of clinical work.

Freudian dream theory
Freud read long, narrow objects in dreams, snakes among them, as symbols with a sexual meaning, and the snake is one of the examples most often quoted from his dream theory. Plenty of later writers have said that a snake is sometimes just a snake and that this reading was too fixed.
How to weigh it
No other single image has as many opposed readings, and that is the useful part. The same animal is a healer, a tempter and an instinct depending on the story. How you felt in the dream, whether afraid, curious or calm, is a better guide to which of these fits than the snake itself.
