What does it mean to dream about an exam you have not prepared for?

What each tradition says
Psychoanalysis, Vienna, from 1900
Freudian dream theory
Freud wrote that dreams of examinations were about exams the dreamer had actually passed. In his reading, the dream was a comfort addressed to someone worrying over a coming trial: you were afraid then, and it came out well. His view changed over the years, and later he gave other readings as well.

Jungian analysis
Jungian analysts do not assign one fixed meaning to an image. They ask what in the dreamer's present life feels like an examination, who is judging, and what the unprepared feeling is attached to. The same dream can mean different things for two people.
How to weigh it
Waking stress is the ordinary explanation, and these dreams often turn up before a real deadline or a change. The two readings above point in opposite directions, comfort in one and a question in the other, which is a fair summary of how far dream interpretation can be trusted. Use the one that helps you think.
