In modern belief, a white feather is a sign of protection, or a message from someone who has died. Older sources treat a feather as a symbol of truth and lightness. A feather is also what ordinary birds drop all year, so finding one is common.

In modern sign practice, a feather you happen to find is taken as confirmation that you are on the right path, or as a greeting from someone who has passed. There is no long lineage behind the meaning, so treat any specific reading as one writer's opinion.
How to weigh it
Gulls, pigeons, ducks and geese shed white feathers through the year, and wind moves them. That does not make a find less meaningful to the person who made it, but it does mean the feather itself cannot tell you what it means. What you were thinking about when you picked it up is the part worth writing down.
