What does it mean when a butterfly appears?

The butterfly is one of the oldest symbols of the soul. Ancient Greek used one word for both, and Christian imagery uses it for resurrection. In modern belief, a butterfly landing near you is often read as a visit from someone who has died.

What each tradition says

Greece, from around 750 BCE to late antiquity (the sixth century CE)

Greek myth and religion

The Greek word psyche means both soul and butterfly, and Greek art often shows the soul leaving the body as a small winged figure. The link is easy to see in the insect, which seems to die inside a chrysalis and then comes out able to fly.

Christian tradition

In Christian art and popular piety, the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis is used as a picture of resurrection, and it turns up around Easter and at funerals. The picture is drawn from the insect's life cycle and is later and more popular than doctrinal. Early Christian writers more often used the phoenix for rebirth.

Modern belief, built on older Christian ideas of guardian angels and on nineteenth-century Spiritualism

Angel and spirit-guide lore

In modern belief, a butterfly that lands near you, especially at a moment you were thinking of someone who has died, is read as a visit from them. This is a loose belief passed along by books and word of mouth, and two people can read the same butterfly differently.

How to weigh it

Butterflies are drawn to flowers, warmth and the places people sit outside, so seeing one near a garden bench is ordinary. The older readings come from the life cycle of the insect, and the modern one from the way people grieve. Both say a lot about people and very little about what any one butterfly means.
